Body Oil 101

What is Body Oil?

Close-up of oil droplets on a light background

Body oil is a plant-based skincare product made from botanical oils, carrier oils, and sometimes essential oils — with no water, no fillers, and no synthetic binders. It works by reinforcing the skin's natural lipid barrier, sealing in moisture and delivering concentrated nutrients that water-based lotions simply can't match.

Used for centuries across Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, body oil isn't a trend. It's one of the oldest and most effective forms of skin care.

01

How to Apply Body Oil — and When to Use It

Most people apply body oil to dry skin after getting dressed, treat it like lotion, and wonder why results are underwhelming. Technique matters more than the product itself. The single most important tip: apply it within sixty seconds of stepping out of the shower, while your skin is still slightly damp. That residual moisture is exactly what the oil seals in.

Benefits of Body Oil

The headline benefit is hydration, but that undersells what's actually happening. Unlike lotion, body oil works at the level of your skin's lipid barrier, reducing the constant moisture loss that leaves skin tight, dull, or rough by late afternoon. A well-formulated body oil also delivers concentrated vitamins, fatty acids, and botanical actives with nothing diluting them.

Ingredients to Look For

Not all body oils are created equal, and the difference between a product that transforms your skin and one that just feels greasy comes down almost entirely to ingredients. The base oil is the most important decision — different plant oils have different molecular structures, different fatty acid profiles, and dramatically different effects on skin feel and absorption.

Body Oil for Dry Skin

Dry skin is the most common reason people turn to body oil — and it's where body oil delivers its most noticeable results. Dry skin has a compromised lipid barrier, which means it loses moisture faster than normal skin. Lotion adds moisture temporarily; body oil addresses the underlying issue by reducing that moisture loss at the source.

05

Body Oil vs. Body Lotion

They're not the same product in different textures. They work through completely different mechanisms. The short version: lotion adds moisture quickly and is great for normal skin in mild climates. Body oil locks moisture in for longer and outperforms lotion significantly for dry skin, winter conditions, or anyone who wants longer-lasting results with fewer applications.

The ritual

Tell us the moment, we will set the routine

Body oil rewards timing more than quantity. Pick a moment to see where it goes, when to reach for it, and how much your skin actually needs.

Straight from the shower

60 seconds

Body oil suits most skin types, especially dry skin. If your skin is reactive, patch-test a new oil on the inner arm before using it all over.
